Reviews for movies from Comic Con!

Comic Con 2008 was crazy! Seriously the line for the Heroes panel was three miles long. People were taking cabs just to get to the end of the line. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend that panel, but I did hear they previewed the entire first episode of seasons 3: Villains. Actually I wasn’t able to attend any Comic Con panels, which is unfortunate. In the past years I was able to see previews for new shows…like Chuck or Pushing Daisies…but this year the lines were too crazy. Instead I decided to see a few movie premieres.

A stoner action comedy film starring Seth Rogen (Superbad, Knocked up), James Franco (Spiderman, Freaks and Geeks) and produced by Judd Apatow, Pineapple Express is the 21st century answer to Cheech and Chong. Though most stoner films usually insults audiences with little creativity and tend to sell audiences with cliché’s and platitudes, Pineapple Express on the other hand provides substantial reasons for laughter. It’s definitely up there with the likes of Superbad and Knocked up.

Worth the Time and Money

The last time I laughed this hard in a movie was probably Superbad or Borat. When I first heard about this movie I was a bit torn. I love Robert Downey Jr., but I HATE Ben Stiller with a passion. To me he is the most annoying actor on the planet. Robert Downey Jr. made this movie totally worth it. He is hilarious in this film, however, there is a cameo appearance by someone that makes this film well worth the time and the price.

Worth the Time and Money

Choke **

From the writer of Fight Club (Chuck Palahniuk), Choke is a disturbing comedy that deals with sexual vises. Sam Rockwell plays a sex addict who is also a Colonial reenactor. To help support his delusional mother, Rockwell cons others by choking at restaurants and gaining sympathy by his saviors. This sick and twisted movie annoyed me at times. There were definitely aspects of the movie that I enjoyed (Sam Rockwell portraying a Colonialist. However, I felt that the film looked a bit low budget and I couldn’t get over some of the poor shooting quality.

Not worth the time and not worth the money

Hamlet 2 **

From the writer of South Park (the movie) and Team America World Police, Hamlet 2 is a ridiculous film about a high school drama teacher who attempts to create a sequel of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet (1). Steve Coogan stars as Dana Marschz, a high school drama director who had his most recent play panned by the school film critic who moonlights as an eight grader. Now that the school has cut the drama program funding, Dana decides to create a hip new play that takes out all the tragic hamlet moments and fills them in with a happy ending. With the help of Jesus and Albert Einstein, and who could forget about the Hilary Clinton orgy, Hamlet 2 takes audiences to a new level of crude and unusual. The play within the movie is better than the movie itself.
